Props or Just Press?

Well, the show was in the paper again. This time the article focused a lot more on me. Also, it was truly a review so the article was both positive and negative hence the title of this post. I’m going to say that the review is positive since I think it contains more positive comments than negative. Even still I must admit it was somewhat nerve wracking reading it for the first time. Without further ado, my review.

Bunsen and Beaker and some penguins

just because I've been couped up in the house all day looking at wedding stuff with a cold while L is laying out at the beach. yeah.

I got props!

Well, diy:mia got props. And since L & I are the only active members of diy:mia that means I got props, right?
Anyway, the show is getting a bunch of press, which is great. In fact I spent some time yesterday afternoon with a reviewer from the New Times (local Miami weekly)for an article coming out on Thursday. Aren't I snazy? All my good dialogue has been used up with all these press ops so without further ado, I present my press clippings:

I really should watch more Avatar. It should definitely be part of my push to do more things for pure enjoyment and less things out of obligation. Absolutely. Right up there with saying "no" more often and taking spur of the moment trips.

next time I get a brilliant idea....

someone shoot me?

this is just a note to say that the TEAR/OFF show is currently on life support. ok, so really I'm sure it will all work out fine and I'm confident I can pull it all off. however, I hadn't really planned on doing it all alone, ya know? unfortunately due to recent events I'm not at liberty to discuss, that's exactly what has to happen. add one more entry to my list of reasons why I'm a left coast-er and need to return to my people. that's all I'm saying. oh, and I now desperately need a vacation.

This is the backk of the postcard for the show I'm curating/organizing/raising a ruckus with.....
Spent all weekend painting for it. Over 15 murals with several graff artists from all over. It was great only now I have sray can-itus in the fingers... oh well. No pain, no gain, right?

so... I 'm supposed to say what?

I have this coworker who is unintentionally very funny. And occassionally somewhat annoying. Sometimes I want to just stare at her like she's from Mars. Mostly because I just don't know how to respond. I really have to post the following moment so you can fully understand.

Me: (unwrapping a burger which is supposed to be meatless, discovering a grayish beef patty and trying to pull it out of the burger) oh.
Her: Just eat it. Come on.
Me: Nope, It will just make me sick. (extracting the patty and putting it in the trash)
Her: Oh, come on you can eat it.
Me: I haven't eaten meat in about 3 years. If I try now I'll just throw up. It's not pretty. It's fine, I'll just scrape it off.
Her: You know they just did this study on diet. They tested people who ate all meat against people who ate no meat. The meat eaters did 20% better on tests. So I'm smarter since I eat meat.

I ask you, what is the appropriate reply for that?
And who is this they?

ROCK ON!!!!!

We had a new addition to the the household this weekend. Thanks to gift from L's company (can you say av geeks? they give best buy gift cards as extras. I love that!)we brought guitar hero II complete with guitar peripheral home from best buy. Two major discoveries were made. First, I have a very crappy sense of rhythm and second, L knows a lot more rock bands than I thought. I still have her beat on metal, though. I can play them worth crap but at least I still recognize the songs. I did manage to get tattooed love boys down pretty well, though.. anyhow, you can guess what occupied most of our weekend.

no worries

last week L and I ran away for a week in the keys.
yes, that's right, a week. 7 whole days.
that's the nice thing about living somewhere where the sun is always shining. if it always feel like summer, why not take vacation any time you want?

anyhow, we did a lot... including the following:
parasailing
jet skis
snorkeling the reef
snorkeling long key
kayaking (ocean and mangrove trails- mangroves are why I am covered in tiny pink polka dots of bug bites)
swimming (pool and ocean)
sunbathing
bike riding
sailing (on a catamaran , I'm in love!)
powerboat ride
a trip to the ER (for me- I'm a dork with a nearly a kidney infection- dumb me.)
watching the sunset
random stops along US-1 (including adding to our koozy collection)
taking pictures
bar hopping
camping
and loud music.

Course the "highlight" was our ride on the banana boat with the out of control driver..... We ended up falling off and tumbling into the ocean. not too bad if you don't count me kicking L in the nose on the way off resulting in a profusely bleeding nose. yup. followed by two black eyes. she looks really tough. it would be really funny if she didn't look so bad.

doesn't that look lovely?

that's not fog.
it's not smog.
(we're not back in LA. sad, I know.)

it's smoke.
really.
see, that's apparently what it's like when you live down here.
there are wildfires clear on the other side of the state but magically the smoke is covering all of the Miami area.
thickly. 1-2 mile visibility. ash drifting in the air. and everything smelling like campfires. only without the s'mores.
yup. crazy, huh?

the only good news...

is, I'm getting type! Yup, type. As in lead. As in the wonderful archaic little pieces I torture myself with so lovingly. I am so.... excited! It's been a really rough week. I'm experiencing what I hope is a temporary exposure to the morally bankrupt/evil empire/vicious/Professor Coldheart inspired side of corporate America. It's been very disheartening. then, out of the blue, today I received a call from a printer who was referred to me by someone I work with. He had been told I knew something about press maintenance and has an very profitable proposition. He has a hobby printer shop with a currently out of commission Universal press. In exchange for the repair of said press, he will give me 5-10 cases of type along with a type cabinet. yes, give. beautiful, right? Funny thing is I had been asked to contact this printer regarding his broken press and had attempted to do so on several occasions but had never been successful. last week I had finally become convinced it was never gonna pan out and that he was way too flaky and now suddenly he appears. it's magic. magic, I tell you. magic. whatever, I'm just thrilled that I'll have type.

what? no salt on the rim?

what? no salt on the rim?, originally uploaded by de:generate.

it was the beginning of a beautiful weekend.....
or so I thought.
saturday morning we trekked over to little havanna to find chilaquiles. they weren't what we were expecting but still turned out good. we wondered around a bit the hit the beach. it was full of tourists here for the world music conference which made for some good laughs. next was tequila chicas for a couple buckets of corona with sam and that's when the trouble started. we decided to venture over to the home show and pick up scott, easy right? nope- sam and L decide to try and play football while walking the streets of south beach. actually easy until I tried to join in, while talking on the phone to scott. and that's the story of how a's big toe met the grate which sliced it right open. yup. didn't notice it for about a block. then had to excuse myself from the rest of the evening's activities. Sunday looked better till I went back to the beach and got sand everywhere including the cut. then lost my money, cut my hand on the washer while loading laundry and the list goes on....... I'm thinking about smudging my entire body in an effort to clear myself of whatever is dodging me just so I can survive the week...

March Beach

DSC01271, originally uploaded by de:generate.

See how clear the water is? See how L is standing in the water?
This is the major redeeming thing about relocating to Miami - gorgeous beaches. And it's only March!

PS:Also

I also really really want to get started on my next couple of tattoos. Am thinking of a self designed ampersand/ohm mix plus this on my lower back.
could look nice on the beach this summer....
right?

too fast

i just noticed that it's march. really. time is going by much too fast. i have a ton to get done in the next few months and soon we'll have been in fl for a year. i'm not sure what i expected but this is not it. this ain't too bad, though. it's not west coast but i'm managing..... i really need to get all this wedding stuff planned out, though. i'm really getting behind. mostly because i keep coming up with cool new ideas and get distracted so... easily. it's crazy how much stuff there is out there to help with weddings now.

in the beginning

there was a very crappy inspiron 5100.
yup. oh for the want of a mac!
I'm trying to clean up the laptop. It's a nearly lost cause. Largely due to my inability to not store never ending amounts of pictures, videos and music on the thing. Technically they're all on the external hard drive now (thank you L. such a beautiful shinning 250gb of wonderfulness it is) however the software is not so much. Plus organizing and supporting this pop culture addiction is somewhat over whelming. course if I hurried up and got it done then the upkeep would be simple, right? I'm using media monkey to re-tag all the mp3's,
itunes for podcast and tunes,
ted to manage show rss feeds, utorrent to collect, VLC to watch . isn't there an all-in-one somewhere?
